Thread Lift vs. Facelift: Are They the Same Lifting Procedure? Differences in Effects and Objectives

Many confuse thread lifts and facelifts. This article clarifies their distinct purposes and effects, explaining why a thread lift is a supplementary procedure and not a substitute for a facelift.

Thread Lift vs. Facelift: Are They the Same Lifting Procedure? Differences in Effects and Objectives
These two tools have fundamentally different purposes. It's like the difference between trimming the leaves of a tree and straightening its trunk.

Hello.

This is SNU Plastic Surgery.

When discussing slow aging,

many people often confuse the effects and purposes of ‘thread lifts’ and ‘facelift surgery’.

This is a similar misunderstanding to thinking of ‘nutritional supplements’ and ‘prescription medications’ as being in the same category.

Today, I will clearly distinguish between these two and explain why a thread lift is a ‘supplementary procedure’ that cannot replace a facelift.

# Thread Lift VS Facelift: Fundamental Difference – ‘Threads within the Skin’ vs. ‘Redistribution of Skin, Muscles, and Fat’

The first thing to understand is that the ‘layers’ on which the two methods act are completely different.

✅ Thread Lift (Procedure)

Special absorbable threads (such as PDO, PCL) are inserted into the middle to deep dermis layer of the skin.

These threads induce collagen production and provide physical support, creating a lifting effect on the skin surface.

It primarily targets skin tissue closer to the epidermis.

✅ Facelift (Surgery)

It reaches below the subcutaneous tissue, lifting and structurally repositioning the skin, muscles (SMAS fascia), and fat layers as a single unit.

Deep layers of tissue are securely moved and fixed in a new position.

To put it simply,

if a thread lift is like ‘slightly smoothing out wrinkles in clothing’,

a facelift is like ‘reconstructing the structure and design of the clothing’.

# Why shouldn't you expect facelift results from a thread lift? 3 Key Reasons!

Frankly, I understand why this confusion arises.

A thread lift also uses the word ‘lift’ and provides a temporary pulling effect.

However, there is a world of difference in the essence and longevity of a thread lift's effects.

Below are 3 reasons why you should not expect facelift results from a thread lift.

1. The scale and weight of the target tissues are different.

The weight of the skin, thick fat layer, and muscle layer lifted by a facelift is much heavier and more voluminous than what a few thin threads from a thread lift can support.

The strength of a thread lift is insufficient to defy gravity and change the structure.

2. The duration and stability are fundamentally different.

👉🏻 Thread Lift:

Depending on the type of thread, effects are expected to last about 1 year.

As the threads are gradually absorbed, their supportive strength diminishes.

It relies on a supplementary pulling effect.

👉🏻 Facelift:

The structure itself is permanently fixed in a new position.

Even 5-7 years or more after surgery, a noticeably lifted state is maintained compared to individuals of the same age who have not undergone surgery.

It is a long-term structural change.

3. The range of aging problems that can be solved is different.

✅ What a thread lift does well:

Subtle improvement of facial contours,

Assistance with minor wrinkles in the mid-face,

Preventive management of early aging

✅ What a facelift solves:

Clearly sagging jawline (including neck sagging),

Pronounced sagging of the fat layer in the cheeks,

Excessive loose skin, deep wrinkles around the eyes and between the eyebrows (when accompanied by a forehead lift), etc.

Moderate to severe aging requiring structural changes.

# Smart Choice Guide: Consider Thread Lifts and Facelifts in These Situations!
# Choose the ‘Right Tool’ for Your Goal

The essence of slow aging is ‘maintaining the best possible state without going against the natural flow’.

If you don't have significant sagging yet, but want to prevent it and make subtle adjustments,

a thread lift can be a supplementary tool.

However, if the effects of gravity are already clearly visible, and you desire a definite change and a long-term solution,

you should seriously consider facelift surgery.

A thread lift cannot replace a facelift.

It's like how a portable charger cannot replace household electricity.

Each has its clear role and limitations.

The most ideal approach is to get an accurate diagnosis of what ‘layer’ of your facial structure is currently experiencing what problems through an honest consultation with a specialist.

After that, determine whether preventive care is needed or if structural intervention is required, and choose the smart ‘next step’ that suits your slow aging journey.
